can video blogging be the next step?

I’ve debated adding video to my blogs. In a couple of instances at Mommy Know How, I have added videos. I used those to review products and demonstrate some tips for keeping kids busy. So I’m not a stranger to video blogging. However, I’m just now sure I’m brave enough to do it with my face in front of the camera and I don’t have the equipment for it. (All the posts I’ve done so far have been through my cell phone).

But I wonder still, with places like youtube and 12seconds TV, is there a place for me in the video blogging world? What would I bring to the table that would make me worth watching?

Those are the two questions I think you must ask yourself before doing any kind of video blog. I for one don’t really want to hear about your shower that morning or that you’re on your third cup of coffee. Ok I suppose that if your delivery is good it can be entertaining but if you are going to spend the time to make a video (be it 12 seconds or 12 minutes) shouldn’t it pack more than entertainment value or have a purpose?

When I accompanied Bug’s class to DC in May, I took lots of video on my cell phone. I frantically uploaded it all every night at the hotel so my memory card was empty for the next day. That was more to remember some of what we saw as well as sharing it with family and friends back home who could log in to my page at myspace and see what we did that day. Fun and exciting yes? We thought so but it’s not blog worthy by any means.

I guess for now I will hold off on regular video blogs but should I ever decide to dive in, you will be the first to know.

What do you think makes a good video blog? What do you want to see?

I have been considering vlogging as well, and wonder the same thing. What can I bring that is unique? I think in the end, if someone is talented and can sort of tell a “story” with a short clip, even if it’s about something like a cup of coffee, the story and the connection to the audience are what make a successful video.

Good luck, hope to see you do it some day! :)

First, I am sorry it’s taken me so long to get here, and to comment!

I’m not a “blogger” by any stretch of the imagination. I started my blog to simply ramble on about a few things, from cigars to wine to whatever else crossed my mind. hence the name, babblingaboutnothing.com However, finding 12seconds.tv and seesmic.com have opened up the possibilities to me, and I’m enjoying them. I’ve done some video reviews of wines on Seesmic and 12seconds, and have found I really like the medium.

I like video blogging so much so, that my last few updates have been video reviews only. I also have decided that I like video reviews so much that I pulled my wine content off of the first blog to focus it on a more appropriate blog, agoodtimewithwine.com

I will say my first few videos were rambling and unfocused. However, I think the last one I did, which I just posted ,was a lot better. I try to keep them under 3 minutes, because I fear people will zone out.

I think that video will slowly overtake the blogging medium. It is pretty easy, and you are able to show more expression, as well as props. I try to add my text to my videos, so that you can read if you want to, watch if you want to. And, lets not forget the all important google indexing ;)

Matt, Thanks for coming by! The more I poke around in the vlogging world, I think that it is something I could do. video blogging seems more personal and I think that I could probably have fun with it.

I’ll be heading over to your sites to check it out, I’m pretty much up for trying anything new that adds to the blogging experience.

@To Think – I think that’s the thing I struggle with the most is what can I add? I’m not into tooting my own horn but who knows? It could be my personality or odd sense of humor that people will benefit from. The more I look into it and research it, the more I’m thinking about it.

Go for it! You don’t have to be an A-list videoblogger, just add more videos into your own site. Cellphone based videoblogging is a great way to start. Just a short clip can say a lot, and you don’t need to be in the clip.

I’ve been blogging for years. I focus a lot on emerging technology trends, so I try out just about anything that comes along. I’ve video blogged from my cellphone, from my digital camera (currently a Canon PowerShot SD 1000 which shots decent video, a Pansonic camcorder, which I use less and less, and a webcam).

I don’t really do video blogs that are separate from my own blog, but try to incorporate the video into my regular blog. Check out the video section of my blog for examples and some discussion of that.

Thanks aldon, I’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback and suggestions about creating video blogs. I may have to add some of the ones we took with my cell phone when we were in DC this past May.

    Great post!
I love video blogging. I use it in addition to writing a post. Of course, I’m not going to tell anyone how my shower was this morning…lol
I try to keep my videos under 2 minutes unless it is some outstanding video footage.
Also, video blogging brings traffic to my site from other video sites. I use a site called tubemogul. It will automatically upload my video to over 15 sites with just one upload. It makes video blogging easier.

Also thanks for the comment on my blog.
    Take care
    Tom
