There are some days (A LOT OF DAYS) when I don’t feel I am doing enough for the kids. Working at home was supposed to solve my commuting problems and in many ways it has. I no longer buy office clothes, shoes or lunches out. I don’t drive unless I want to, and I’m here. Every day.
On the other hand, as WAHM and writer, Annie Mueller pointed out in Freelance Parenting: Imperfect but Complete over at Freelance Writing Gigs, my love isn’t always perfect but it’s here.
She reminds me that yes, sometimes I am not altogether here, (when I am completely “HERE” really?) but if my kids do need me, if they are tired or scared, or worried or sad, I. AM. HERE.
Annie echoes my own sentiments and fears 100% when she says she feels she is damaging tender psyches by not devoting all of herself to her kids.
I know what she means all to well. Some days the mean mom in me takes over more than the ones the kids really want when I have bark orders to give me an hour to finish an article, most times just so I can get it invoiced and paid so we CAN buy groceries.
I think that what Annie says is so true for many WAHMs. We come home to work with the idea that we are doing this to make sure our kids know we love them; to be there and give them love. Work can complicate things and even make us feel like we aren’t giving them the kind of perfect love we envisioned when we came to the home office – but it’s all there. The love we feel is there.
Who cares what the neighbors think about how well we care for them and love them? We are home, we are working, for them and with them to make their lives happy, complete and full.
Nichole,
Annie has some great points. It can be a very tough job as a WAHM, but it’s all worth it for the same general reasons, one of the most significant being the opportunity to always be around the kids. It’s a wonderful, fulfilling life, no matter how challenging.
